Tuesday Timewarp: Sergio and Zap Mama

Wood and I just got back from Wolf Trap. A true flashback, this is who we saw:

Of course, Sergio Mendez was a bit older. And, as Wood pointed out, the music in its new iteration sounded more like something from "The Love Boat."

Zap Mama was amazing, however. In fact, she has a fascinating story, having been born of a Belgian father and a Bantu (Congan tribe) mother. Her father was killed when she was only a week old by Simba rebels. In fact, she nearly didn't survive, but her mother and siblings were relocated to Belgium because of her father's citizenship. She creates the most beautiful Afro-European music: a mix of R&B, hip hop and African-inspired a capella.

She appeared tonight sans Erykah Badu, by the way.
